D-Link DVC-1000 i2Eye Video Phone

I had her and my dad read the manual and quick setup guide, and told them to install it when ready. Both were eager to take a hand at it running through the setup wizard and getting the IP address. Since they have no hardware firewall on the hub things were easy. They run Zone Alarm on the computer instead.

i2Eye setup wizard couldn't be easier to use

By the way, everyone that saw and had a chance to try out the i2Eye commented on very cool it looks and how innocuous it is on top of your television. This is not some big ugly box that distracts from your favorite 52-inch TV monitor, or in a business environment either. It is hardly noticeable in fact.

The i2Eye is unobtrusive and beautifully designed.

If you are running a hardware firewall on your router/hub or wireless router/hub, you might have problems getting your broadband assigned IP address. If you do, don’t hesitate to call the D-Link tech support line at 1-800-93-i2eye (1-800-934-2393) or email them at support@i-2-eye.com. Whether you’re PC or Mac oriented, or neither but just need a little help setting up, they are very very good.

IWe used the i2Eye’s built-in microphone when make several calls to my home and family, the sound was very good from either ends and the picture quality at full frame rates with more than acceptable. We could easily see the details in the pictures and models my kids held up for their grandparents to see. A tip for users is to make sure you have good bright lighting in front of those making the calls.

If my parents are any measure of the vast potential market, then the DVC-1000 i2Eye should be a big hit because they loved using it.

They found it easy to set up, make calls and it added a new fun technological aspect to their life. Even my Dad, who still has problems with VCR's and DVD players, loved using it. They're thinking Christmas presents for the rest of our immediate family

The Bottom Line –
We think that D-Link’s i2Eye DVC-1000 Broadband VideoPhone may finally be the break through in hardware that makes consumer Internet Telephony work. At US$299 each or $499 for a pair (watch for rebate opportunities too) this is a great buy for the quality that you get. And speaking of great buys; this is an opportunity of all time for the S/M Business with distant or just inconvenient offices. Why spend a few grand on an expensive unit that really doesn’t do anymore?
