The best CD burning software for you?

Tech Lab Staff Review,
September 24, 2002

There are some very sophisticated features in Nero 5 that even professional users will appreciate. In the installed Nero Toolkit are Nero CD Speed and Nero DriveSpeed. DriveSpeed will with a press of the Detect button ascertain all the maximum read, write and rewrite speeds (including the actual KB/s) your attached CD-ROM burner is capable of.

Nero CD Speed is a very sophisticated analysis application that tests a multiple of speed and quality parameters of any CD ROM burner. We’ve adopted it as our official application for testing burners and manufacturers claims of performance. No more false speed claims or unstated specifications for slow CD Drives, Gotcha!

If you're a programmer or software developer, you can now use Nero 5.5's Embedded API (Application Program Interface) to add powerful CD-writing functions to your own applications.

Nero Wave Editor is a very professional sound file editor for five of the most common audio formats; aif, mp3, vqf, wav and wma. When you open any sound file, Nero Wave Editor creates a “Peak File” graphic of that tune. From there, the sky is the limit as to what you can do to edit it with faders, equalizers, dynamic processors, time corrections, special effects like flangers or chorus, delay, enhancements, noise reductions and more.

Nero 5 also includes a Media Player that is on par with any and can create play lists, shuffle or replay forever any songs you want.

The main feature of Nero 5 is of course the “Burning ROM”, which allows you to use a cleaver on screen “Nero Wizard” to pilot you through either Compile a new Audio, Data or Other Formats like Picture, Video or Mixed Audio+Data CD, or just clone Copy a CD. Even the clumsiest non-technical friends of mine could create a CD with this software. If you’re more accomplished at creating CD’s, you can turn off “Nero Wizard” and drag ‘n drop the files you want to burn. Nero 5 allows you to make high quality VCD and SVCD discs with either their new MPEG-1encoder or AVI, and Audio CD’s in WAV, MP3, CDA or M3U playlist formats. Nero will even burn a bootable backup of your systems hard disk drive, a nice little benefit.

Nero Burning ROM 5.5 supports DVD+RW, DVD-RW and DVD-R. Even if you do not own a DVD-Recorder, you can test the DVD support by burning DVD images, which can be burnt on supported DVD-recorders.

You can write closed or open sessions, multi-sessions, PC or Mac compatible CD’s and even create beautiful jacket labels with the accompanying Nero Cover Designer application. It’s very comprehensive and very well written. Nero 5 (v.5.5) even comes with a label kit and label press to apply your CD label creation straight onto the CD. We don’t know of any other Burning software that included a label press.

The Bottom Line:
While Nero 5 Burning ROM may not look as graphically “pretty” as other software, it’s professional design and approach won’t leave anyone wanting more.
We test burned 20 CD’s of audio, video and data files an did not have a single “coaster”.
