Button clicks are very positive and take moderate pressure, and the scroll wheel is very smooth with slight smooth ratcheting. The sideways movement of the scroll wheel is easy and doesn’t take much finger pressure.

Our entire review panel loved the exceptionally smooth gliding of this mouse on a tabletop or mouse pad, as well as the very high precision of the laser technology at 1600 DPI. There was not one single objection to the Pebble from the panel. The biggest problem was getting it back for each user after their testing.

All in all this is a great mouse even for twice the actual retail price, so the suggested retail US $19.99 is too good to pass up.

Fourth Mouse, but with no tail -

Macally Pebble Wireless, Portable Wireless Laser 3 Button Mouse for Mac or PC. We saved the best for last. The glossy black and matt silver Pebble is the most interesting and unique of this herd of mice, and most which we‘ve seen in the last couple years. While it shares the same 0 (zero) shape and a trio of resolution choices for its Opto-Mechanical Laser technology as the wired USB Pebble, the similarities end there.

The Pebble Wireless is, well, wireless; using 2.4Ghz RF technology which is a huge improvement over the various past mice that used 900Mhz RF radios that had range and linking issues. The Pebble links up every time and range is measured in multiple feet, not -inches.

This is cool - the little finger tip sized USB RF receiver dongle, which is often lost in transport with other mice, stores in side the Pebble Wireless! Just twist counter-clockwise the top half of the Pebble Wireless and inside are two AA battery slots and between them a space for the USB dongle to store when traveling. Just stick it in your pocket or computer case and go, no losing the USB receiver.

Like the wired Pebble, you can select either 400 / 800 / 1600 DPI resolution by pressing down the left and right button and watching the red led on the top of the Pebble blink. We found the precision of the Opto-Mechanical Laser to be as accurate as mice costing $50 to $80 US; which is pretty amazing for a $30 wireless mouse!

Button clicks are sure and precise, and the 2-D scroll wheel is also smooth to rotate with a light feel of ratcheting to give you an indication of rotation amount. Just like the wired Pebble, this Pebble Wireless is a little more than 3/4th scale of mice you are used to seeing. It feels good in your hand and steering it with you fingers instead of your big mitts is more precise.

Then only somewhat negative comment we had was that it would be nice if the Pebble Wireless was rechargeable, perhaps using a cradle like the old Macally RF Mouse had (I still have one and love using it). But we found that buying a 4 pack of 2000 mAh AA NiMH batteries with a charger (about US$15.00) are a good alternative. Two of these rechargeable AA’s lasts a good couple weeks of 6 hour use, and then you have the other two from the pack to swap in while charging the two you’ve been using.

We highly recommend you take a very good look at the Pebble wireless at a modest retail price of only $29.95, along with the other three Macally mouse herd. All four are very tame and talented mice that would love to make a home at your house.

The Tech Lab review crew rates the Macally Pebble Wireless with Five Stars and we give it our Editors' Choice 2008 award
